A Journey to the Home of British Motorsport: The Silverstone Experience

Silverstone is not just a circuit; it is the birthplace of the Formula 1 World Championship, having hosted the first-ever F1 race in 1950. Located in Northamptonshire, England, the circuit is steeped in over 70 years of history and offers visitors a chance to delve into the heart of British motorsport. The key attraction for fans is the interactive Silverstone Museum and the opportunity for a guided “Backstage Tour” of the facilities.
The guided Backstage Tour offers unique access to areas usually reserved for teams and officials, including the historic Grand Prix podium, the International Media Centre, and a walk down the Wellington Straight. This 45-minute tour, often bundled with museum entry, provides unparalleled insight into the logistics of an F1 event. For the ultimate experience, the exclusive Paddock Tour during a race weekend offers direct access to team garages and driver activity, making it a dream for any motorsport enthusiast.

Fun Fact: The land that the circuit occupies has a rich history even before racing. During World War II, it was a Royal Air Force (RAF) bomber station, RAF Silverstone. The first races were held on the runways and perimeter roads of the airfield in 1948.

The Silverstone “Backstage” Tour and Museum

The primary experience at Silverstone is centered around its superb museum, which offers self-guided tours with interactive displays and simulators. The “Backstage Tour” is a separate, dedicated guided experience available on select dates. It typically lasts around 2 hours and provides access to operational areas usually restricted during major events.

What You Will See:
  • Race Control: The high-tech operational hub that manages the British Grand Prix and other events.
  • The Winners’ Podium: A highlight for many, allowing a photo opportunity on the exact spot where legends have celebrated their victories.
  • The Pit Lane and Garages: A walk through the nerve center of team operations during race weekends.
  • Media Center: See where hundreds of journalists report on the action.
  • A Tour of the Circuit: A guided bus tour provides a unique, driver’s perspective of the iconic corners like Copse, Stowe, and Hanger Straight, provided there is no on-track action.
British Motorsport Icons

Silverstone has played a pivotal role in the careers of many British racing legends:

  • Lewis Hamilton: The most successful driver in British Grand Prix history, Hamilton has won his home race a record nine times. The “Hamilton Straight” (the start-finish straight) is named in his honor.
  • Sir Stirling Moss: Moss became the first Briton to win the British Grand Prix in 1955, driving a Mercedes-Benz in a dominant performance.
  • Nigel Mansell: Known for “Mansell Mania,” he took three emotional wins at Silverstone, with fans famously invading the track after his 1992 victory.
  • Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart: Both Scottish multiple world champions achieved multiple victories at Silverstone, with Clark winning the British GP five times between 1962 and 1967.
Getting There

The circuit is located near the village of Silverstone, about 1.5 hours north-west of London.

  • By Car: Driving is the most convenient option. Use the M1 or M40 motorways. The official address is Silverstone Circuit, Towcester, NN12 8TN. Free parking is available.
  • By Public Transport: There is no direct train station. The nearest stations are Milton Keynes Central, Northampton, and Banbury. From these stations, a bus or taxi is required for the final 30-40 minute journey. During major events, dedicated shuttle buses are the best option.

Costs and Booking (2026 Prices)

  • Silverstone Museum Entry (Standard): Starts from around £28.50 for adults.
  • Guided “Backstage” Tour: Approximately £30 per person.
  • Exclusive Museum Tours: £20 per person (must have a museum entry ticket).

Booking is essential for both museum entry and guided tours via the official Silverstone website, as availability can be limited, especially during event times.  For the calmest experience, book a tour on a weekday outside of major F1 or MotoGP events. You can visit the Silverstone Museum website to check opening times and dates.
